Ecuador has experienced another deadly incident in what appears to be an ongoing wave of violence attributed to organized crime. Reports indicate that seven individuals were killed and four others wounded in an attack on a pool hall in the city of Santo Domingo, located approximately 100 miles west of the nation’s capital, Quito.

This marks the second such attack in Santo Domingo in less than a month. Police Colonel Beatriz Benavides has stated, “Presumably this violent incident stems from a territorial dispute between organized crime groups and organized armed groups.” The evidence suggests a pattern of similar assaults, with three other pool hall attacks occurring in recent weeks across the country.

Ecuador has long been recognized as a transit point for cocaine shipments destined for the United States and Europe. The country has become a hub for criminal organizations involved in various illicit activities, including extortion and contract killings. Some of these groups are reportedly linked to cartels based in Mexico, Colombia, and Albania.

Data from the Ecuadoran Observatory of Organized Crime reveals a troubling trend: more than 4,600 homicides were recorded in the first half of this year, representing a 47% increase from the same period in 2024. This surge in violence continues despite the recapture of Adolfo Macías, alias Fito, described as the country’s most prominent drug lord.

In July, the Ecuadoran government extradited Macías to the United States. He has pleaded not guilty to a seven-count indictment charging him with international cocaine distribution, conspiracy, and weapons offenses. The U.S. government has classified Los Choneros, the gang led by Macías, as one of the most violent criminal organizations, citing its connections to powerful Mexican drug cartels.
