A seismic event registering as a 6.0 magnitude earthquake has sent tremors through southeastern Afghanistan, not far from the border with Pakistan. This report comes directly from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenter of this quake was pinpointed 36 kilometers, or roughly 22 miles, north of Bāsawul, Afghanistan. The USGS indicates that the quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometers or about 6.2 miles. It made its presence felt at 11:47 p.m. local time on Sunday. As of now, no immediate damage has been reported.

This development follows earlier reports that a 6.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Afghanistan on October 7, 2023. That quake was accompanied by significant aftershocks. The ruling Taliban government of Afghanistan estimated the death toll from that event to be approximately 4,000. However, the United Nations offered a considerably more conservative estimate, suggesting around 1,500 fatalities. This was the most devastating natural disaster to befall Afghanistan in recent memory.
As we continue to monitor this situation, it is important to remember the unpredictable nature of such geological events and the potential for significant human and material loss.
