Authorities in the Bahamas have arrested a man in connection with the disappearance of an American woman who reportedly fell overboard during an evening boat excursion near Hope Town last Saturday.
The Royal Bahamas Police announced the arrest Wednesday evening, hours after the United States Coast Guard confirmed it had opened a criminal investigation into the case of Lynette Hooker, approximately 56 years old, who vanished in waters off Elbow Cay.
According to Bahamian officials, Mrs. Hooker was traveling by boat with her husband, Brian Hooker, 58, when she reportedly entered the water and was swept away by strong currents. The incident occurred around 7:30 in the evening as the couple navigated a small dinghy toward their yacht near Hope Town.
Mr. Hooker reported that his wife fell into the water and that despite his attempts to reach her, turbulent currents separated them. He stated that Mrs. Hooker had the ignition key with her when she went overboard, forcing him to paddle the vessel back to the marina. The disappearance was not reported to authorities until approximately 4:00 the following morning, some eight and a half hours after the alleged incident.
On Wednesday evening, officers from the Royal Bahamas Police Force approached Mr. Hooker’s yacht, identified as the Soulmate, which was positioned between two landmasses near Marsh Harbour. Witnesses observed two officers securing what appeared to be a rope to the vessel’s side during their inspection. One officer was seen examining the yacht’s interior through a window before the police departed several minutes later.
The daughter of the missing woman, Karli Aylesworth, has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding her mother’s disappearance. She has indicated that certain aspects of the account provided do not align with what she knows of the situation, though she has not elaborated publicly on specific inconsistencies.
Mr. Hooker has not responded to requests for comment and has not been charged with any crime at this time. The identity of the arrested individual has not been released by Bahamian authorities, nor have officials confirmed whether the arrest is directly related to Mr. Hooker.
The case has drawn the attention of both Bahamian and American law enforcement agencies. The involvement of the Coast Guard’s criminal investigation unit suggests that federal authorities are treating this matter with considerable seriousness, though the precise nature of their concerns has not been disclosed.
Search efforts for Mrs. Hooker have continued throughout the week, though the strong currents in the area present significant challenges to recovery operations. Hope Town, located on Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands, is a popular destination for American boaters and tourists.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not ruled out any possibilities as they work to determine what transpired during that evening boat trip. The cooperation between American and Bahamian law enforcement reflects the international dimensions of cases involving American citizens abroad and the commitment of both nations to pursue justice regardless of jurisdiction.
