A devastating bus accident has claimed the lives of at least 79 individuals, including 19 children, in northwestern Afghanistan. The tragedy unfolded in Herat province, involving Afghan nationals returning from Iran.
The Ministry of Interior spokesperson, Abdul Mateen Qani, said the incident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 8:30 p.m. local time. The bus, carrying passengers homeward bound, collided with a truck and a motorbike, resulting in a catastrophic fire that claimed numerous lives at the scene.
This accident underscores the persistent challenges of road safety in Afghanistan. Poor infrastructure and driver negligence have been cited as contributing factors to the frequency of such incidents. The significance of this should not be overlooked, as it points to broader issues of transportation safety in the region.

This tragedy occurs against the backdrop of large-scale repatriation efforts. Nearly 1.8 million Afghans have been forcibly returned from Iran in recent months, with additional deportations from Pakistan and Turkey. The Taliban administration has expressed criticism of these mass expulsions, while the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation reports that approximately 6 million Afghan refugees remain abroad.
The facts raise important questions about the safety and welfare of returning Afghan nationals, as well as the capacity of Afghanistan’s infrastructure to accommodate this influx. We will continue to remember the families and friends of those who lost their lives in such a tragic way.
