In the city of Sulaymaniyah, situated in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq, an arrest involving a leading Kurdish political figure has triggered significant disturbances. This event has reportedly led to the loss of at least five lives and injuries to 18 others.
Reports indicate that security forces initiated a substantial operation to apprehend Lahur Sheikh Jangi Talabani, nephew of the late Iraqi president Jalal Talabani, invoking Iraq’s counterterrorism law. Burhan Sheikh Rauf, a representative of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the political party that has a predominant influence over Sulaymaniyah and Talabani’s former affiliation, outlined the nature of the charges. Rauf stated that Talabani “had plans to carry out operations against the government and create chaos.”
The arrest has elicited strong reactions from Talabani’s followers, resulting in violent clashes with security forces. Talabani, a previously acknowledged ally of the US-led coalition against the Islamic State, co-founded the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s Zanyari intelligence agency and was noted for his leadership in countering terrorism.
In the year 2020, Talabani, along with his cousin Bafel Talabani, assumed co-leadership of the party. However, after a fierce internal power struggle a year later, he was removed from his position. Subsequently, he established his own political entity, the People’s Front, and has continued to exert influence within Sulaymaniyah.
Rauf initially reported that Talabani failed to appear before a judge following a summons and later disclosed that the operation was undertaken abruptly without providing him prior information about the arrest warrant. The aftermath of the raid saw the loss of three local security force personnel, and two members of the People’s Front also lost their lives, according to statements from the party.
Dillsoz Zangana, a representative of the People’s Front party and prospective candidate for Iraq’s parliamentary elections, has condemned the operation, branding it as “a regional and internal coup d’état.” She also shed light on the violent nature of the operation, which she claimed involved the use of heavy weaponry and resulted in fear and panic among residents.

The recent instability follows the detainment of another prominent opposition figure, Shaswar Abdulwahid, leader of the New Generation Movement. He was taken into custody on August 12 by Sulaymaniyah police and faces criminal threat charges, which could potentially result in a six-month prison term.
