A man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of attempted murder after stabbing two Jewish men in Golders Green, a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in North London, marking the latest in a disturbing series of antisemitic attacks that have plagued the British capital in recent weeks.
The suspect was observed running along a main thoroughfare in the area, armed with a knife and attempting to stab Jewish members of the public, according to Shomrim, a community volunteer neighborhood watch organization. Members of the group responded immediately and detained the suspect until London Metropolitan Police arrived at the scene and deployed a taser to take the man into custody.
Counterterrorism officers have assumed leadership of the investigation. Both victims sustained serious injuries but remain in stable condition after receiving initial treatment from Hatzola, a Jewish volunteer emergency response organization that serves the community.
The attack has prompted strong reactions from British leadership at the highest levels. Speaking before Parliament on Wednesday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the incident as “deeply concerning” and called for unwavering support of the police investigation. “I think we all need to do everything we can to support that and be absolutely clear in our determination to deal with any of these offenses, the like of which we’ve seen too much recently,” Starmer stated.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan confirmed what he termed “an appalling attack on two Jewish Londoners in Golders Green,” adding that the city’s Jewish community has become the target of a series of shocking antisemitic attacks. Khan emphasized that there must be absolutely no place for antisemitism in society and announced that police have stepped up high-visibility patrols throughout the area.
This incident represents merely the most recent in a troubling pattern of violence directed at Jewish communities in north London. Over the past month, the area has witnessed multiple attacks, including an arson incident that destroyed several of Hatzola’s ambulances. On April 18, a synagogue in northwest London was attacked, prompting the United Kingdom’s chief rabbi, Sir Ephraim Mirvis, to warn of a “sustained campaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish community” that is gathering momentum.
Following an attempted arson attack on Tuesday in the same area, the head of policing in northwest London acknowledged that residents of Golders Green have already faced a series of attacks and that this latest incident would understandably heighten concerns within the community.
The Community Security Trust, another local organization dedicated to protecting Jewish residents, expressed gratitude to Shomrim, Hatzola, and the London Metropolitan Police for their swift response to Wednesday’s attack.
Golders Green has long served as home to a substantial Jewish population in London, and the escalating pattern of targeted violence against this community raises serious questions about security measures and the broader climate of antisemitism in the British capital. As authorities continue their investigation into this latest attack, the increased police presence in the area reflects the gravity of the threat facing London’s Jewish residents.
