The White House has responded to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., who has once again called for the abolishment of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, also known as ICE.
Ocasio-Cortez issued a campaign email on Monday arguing that ICE, which was established in 2003 during the Patriot Act era, is a ‘rogue agency’ that should not exist. She also used her correspondence to counter critics who have labeled her views as ‘extreme’, as she potentially positions herself for a significant role in the Democratic presidential primary in 2028.
In response, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson released a statement defending the work of ICE stating, “AOC, Democrat Party leader, calls for abolishing ICE; meanwhile, the brave men and women of ICE get dangerous criminal illegal immigrants off our streets and protect American citizens: Why does AOC want to stop that?”
Ocasio-Cortez has been noted for her congressional disagreements and publicized disputes with Tom Homan, border czar for President Donald Trump. Homan has previously referred to her as the ‘dumbest congresswoman ever’ and posed questions about whether she might be indirectly aiding in criminal conspiracy by educating undocumented immigrants on how to avoid capture by U.S. and local law enforcement, including ICE.
The White House statement continued with a critique of New York’s ‘sanctuary’ policies and a list of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants who were taken off the New York City streets by ICE.
To conclude, this ongoing dispute between the White House and Ocasio-Cortez raises important questions about the future of immigration policy and the role of ICE in enforcing it. However, we can all clearly see the need for ICE and the fact that illegal immigrants grew out of control during the Biden administration due to open borders. And that is something that can’t continue during Trump’s presidency.
