More than 20 civilians lost their lives in a Russian airstrike in a village in eastern Ukraine. The victims, ordinary citizens, were going about the routine task of collecting their pensions when tragedy struck.
As reported by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of Ukraine, the Russian airstrike hit the village of Yarova, a settlement situated approximately 15 miles from the city of Sloviansk and somewhat behind the front lines. Zelenskiy has shared distressing video footage, showing bodies and debris scattered across the area. Additionally, Donetsk governor Vadym Filashkin has reported 21 individuals being seriously wounded in the incident.

President Zelenskiy is urging the allies of Kyiv to exert pressure on Russia, whose forces continue to advance into the eastern Donetsk region, despite diplomatic efforts that have largely ground to a halt. He stated, “The world must not remain silent. The world must not remain idle. A response is needed from the United States. A response is needed from Europe. A response is needed from the G20.”
Russian authorities have yet to respond to Zelenskiy’s remarks. Moscow has consistently denied intentionally targeting civilians, but the evidence suggests that tens of thousands have perished since the full-scale invasion that commenced in February 2022. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s human rights commissioner, has described the attack as “yet another confirmation of systemic terror against the civilian population of Ukraine.”
