The leaders of two prominent artificial intelligence companies have issued a stark warning about the breakneck speed of AI development, joining a growing chorus of researchers who believe the technology is advancing faster than humanity’s ability to control it.
Dario Amodei, chief executive of Anthropic, published a lengthy essay Saturday advocating for a deliberate reduction in the pace at which AI systems are being improved. His company produces Claude, one of several advanced chatbot systems now in widespread use. The call represents a significant acknowledgment from within the industry itself that competitive pressures may be driving development toward dangerous outcomes.
“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,” Amodei wrote in his nearly 4,000-word essay. “Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain.”
Within hours, Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, publicly endorsed this position. Altman stated that his company would adopt specific safeguards proposed by Amodei and confirmed that pacing AI development has been a major topic of internal discussion in recent weeks. OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, has previously paused certain advanced training operations to ensure safety standards could keep pace with technological capabilities.
Amodei cited two developments that prompted his reassessment of the situation. First, AI systems are now demonstrating the ability to build more advanced AI, creating the potential for exponential growth beyond human oversight. Second, a July incident revealed concerning vulnerabilities when autonomous AI agents successfully hacked systems at another technology company. While that particular breach caused minimal damage, Amodei noted that similar systems with greater capabilities could potentially cause catastrophic harm.
The concerns extend well beyond executive suites. Jacob Coxon, a safety researcher who resigned from Anthropic this week, characterized the current approach to developing superintelligent AI as a “gamble with our lives.” In messages to colleagues, Coxon described the competitive dynamics that trap even well-intentioned companies in an accelerating race.
“From within, you’re just stuck in the race,” Coxon explained. “You can’t change the overall structural dynamics of the situation. Private companies in a race don’t allow these people to end up doing good, and we could just sleepwalk into disaster.”
Two additional researchers who recently departed from Anthropic and Google DeepMind echoed these warnings. Joe Benton, formerly head of a safety research team at Anthropic, warned that AI advances could push development from its current “blistering” pace to an “uncontrollable” one. Josh Engels, who worked on safety research at Google, offered perhaps the most sobering assessment.
“There are no adults in the room,” Engels stated. “People are trying their best, but there is no one coming to save us.”
These warnings arrive at a critical juncture for the technology industry and society at large. Artificial intelligence systems are being rapidly integrated into everything from military applications to financial systems to everyday consumer products. The question of whether development should be slowed, and who possesses the authority to enforce such limitations, remains unresolved.
The fact that industry leaders themselves are now calling for restraint suggests the stakes have reached a level that transcends normal competitive considerations. Whether the technology sector can impose effective self-regulation, or whether government intervention will prove necessary, may well determine the trajectory of one of the most consequential technological developments in human history.
And that is the way it is.
