Brazilian Federal Police conducted a search of former President Jair Bolsonaro’s residence in Brasília on Wednesday, seeking weapons and ammunition. They found nothing.
The operation, lasting approximately ninety minutes, was ordered by Brazilian Supreme Federal Tribunal Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who has become a central figure in the legal proceedings against the conservative former president. The justice authorized the search despite Bolsonaro’s legal team having previously accounted for all firearms registered in his name.
Justice de Moraes justified the warrant by citing an alleged discrepancy between the number of firearms registered to Bolsonaro and those surrendered during legal proceedings. According to Brazilian records, ten firearms remain registered under the former president’s name, two of which were handed over to Federal Police in April.
João Henrique Nascimento de Freitas, a member of Bolsonaro’s legal defense team, confirmed the search’s outcome through social media. “The defense had already previously disclosed the whereabouts of all the weapons,” he stated. “Result: nothing was found. It is regrettable that a former President of the Republic is still subjected to this type of action.”
An unnamed Federal Police source independently confirmed to the Associated Press that no items were seized during Wednesday’s operation.
The search represents the latest development in what has become an extensive legal campaign against Bolsonaro. The former president is currently serving a twenty-seven-year prison sentence for crimes against democracy under strict house arrest conditions at his Brasília home. The severity of his confinement is notable. Bolsonaro is prohibited from speaking to the press, using communication devices including telephones, or accessing the internet and social media platforms.
These restrictions were modified earlier this year when Bolsonaro received temporary humanitarian provisions for house arrest. The former president, who suffers from multiple health conditions, was hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit following a severe case of bacterial pneumonia. His medical situation prompted authorities to grant the modified detention arrangement.
Justice de Moraes has emerged as a controversial figure in Brazilian politics, particularly among conservatives who view his actions as politically motivated. The justice has authorized numerous judicial actions targeting not only Bolsonaro but members of his family as well.
The incident raises questions about the proportionality of law enforcement actions against a former head of state, particularly when the subject of the search had been previously documented and disclosed. That nothing was discovered during Wednesday’s operation may intensify debate over whether such measures serve legitimate investigative purposes or represent something else entirely.
For now, the facts remain straightforward. Police searched. Police found nothing. And a former president remains confined to his home, unable to defend himself publicly or communicate with the outside world.
