Japanese media reported that eight people were injured in a hammer assault at a Tokyo university on Friday. A 22-year-old student was arrested at the scene. NHK reported that all those injured were conscious. Police sources told the broadcaster that the attack occurred at Hosei University’s Tama Campus in Tokyo on Friday afternoon.

NHK and others reported that the attacker was a female sociology student who had swung her hammer in class. According to several reports, people were bleeding from the brain and the woman said that she was angry at being ignored. According to reports, the woman was arrested on scene.

The police did not confirm immediately the details of what seemed to be an unusual instance of violent crime.

NHK broadcast a live video showing a line-up of emergency vehicles flashing their lights in the suburb of Machida, the Japanese capital.

There are occasional stabbings and even shootings in Japan, including the assassination of former prime minister Shinzo Abe in 2022. The murder with a homemade gun shocked Japan, where firearms are highly controlled and violence of any kind, but particularly gun violence, is rare.

According to its website, Hosei University began in 1880 and was originally a law college. It now has 15 faculties.

In December, two junior high school students were stabbed in the stomach and one was injured at a McDonald’s Restaurant in the southwest of Japan. Later, a man was arrested in connection with the attack. Around 8:30 pm, the teens were waiting in line for their orders when the attacker entered the restaurant and stabbed both of them.

Three people were stabbed in January 2022 outside the prestigious University of Tokyo, just before national college entrance exams. Police said that the victims were an 18-year-old boy, a girl aged 17, and a man aged 72.
