According to Yonhap, as the arrest warrant expires on Monday for the impeached South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol, the anti-corruption bureau has requested that the police step in and detain him.

According to reports, the Corruption Investigation Office of High-ranking officials made this request on Sunday.

A police official told the South Korean publication, “The CIO sent us a formal letter requesting our assistance without consultation prior.” “We are conducting a legal assessment internally.”

Investigators had attempted to arrest Yoon for several hours at his home in Seoul but failed.

Over the weekend, police vehicles and supporters of the impeached President were visible outside his residence in Seoul. In photos, protesters were seen lying down in front of police to block them from entering the residence.

After the anti-corruption officials entered the gate of Yoon’s home, a standoff occurred between his security and police investigators. Three thousand police officers were on the scene.

Eventually, the investigators gave up their efforts about five hours after they arrived.

The Corruption Investigation Office for Senior Officials, as quoted by Yonhap News Agency, said: “We determined that the detention warrant was practically impossible to execute due to the ongoing confrontation. We suspended the execution because we were concerned for the safety of the on-site staff caused by the opposition.”

The CIO stated, “We plan to decide on the next steps after a review.” The CIO said that it was “deeply regrettable” about the behavior of this suspect, who had refused to follow legal procedures.

Yoon was detained after a South Korean Court issued an arrest warrant and search warrant on Dec. 31, in response to his brief imposition of martial law. Yoon’s position has been suspended since December 14.

Yoon declared martial rule in a speech broadcast on December 3. Yoon declared martial law in a televised speech on Dec. 3.

According to the constitution of South Korea, if the president in office is accused by the police of insurrection he can be arrested while still in his position.

The joint investigation team requested the warrant for insurrection charges and abuse of authority after Yoon failed to respond to three summonses.

This is the first time in history that an arrest warrant has been granted for a president.
