Vice President JD Vance has chosen to remain neutral in Israel’s upcoming elections, declining to endorse Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu despite President Donald Trump’s full-throated support for the Israeli leader’s reelection campaign.

In an interview Monday evening, Vance explained his position with characteristic clarity, emphasizing his focus on domestic political contests as the midterm elections approach. The vice president drew a distinction between his role and that of the president, noting that Trump possesses what he termed “the most effective endorsement in American or international political history.”

“I endorse American candidates, and that is where my focus remains in the midterms,” Vance stated. “I am not getting involved in Israeli elections.”

The vice president was careful to clarify that his neutrality should not be construed as opposition to Netanyahu or his government. “I am not anti-endorsing him. I am not pro-endorsing him. I am simply not getting involved in Israeli elections,” he added.

Vance’s measured approach stands in contrast to President Trump’s enthusiastic backing of Netanyahu, which came just one day earlier. In a statement, Trump offered his “Complete and Total Endorsement” of the Israeli prime minister, praising Netanyahu as an indispensable ally in the ongoing confrontation with Iran.

“Bibi Netanyahu has been a Great Warrior Prime Minister, and an even greater Partner for Peace in combatting the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Trump wrote, commending Netanyahu for maintaining strength under considerable political pressure. The president concluded his statement emphatically: “BIBI NETANYAHU WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”

Netanyahu responded swiftly to the presidential endorsement, expressing gratitude for what he characterized as extraordinary support from Washington. “President Trump, my friend Donald, thank you for your extraordinary endorsement,” the prime minister said. “Israel has never had a greater friend in the White House. Together we will never let Iran’s regime get nuclear weapons. Thank you for your clarity, courage and unwavering support.”

The differing approaches between Trump and Vance reflect the complex dynamics of American involvement in Israeli politics at a critical juncture in Middle Eastern affairs. While both men maintain their commitment to the U.S.-Israel alliance, their divergent strategies on endorsements underscore the balance between supporting key allies and respecting the sovereignty of democratic processes abroad.

The Israeli elections come at a pivotal moment as Netanyahu’s government continues military operations aimed at degrading Iranian influence in the region. The prime minister has positioned himself as the leader best equipped to maintain Israel’s security relationship with the United States while confronting existential threats from Tehran and its regional proxies.

For Trump, the endorsement represents a continuation of his administration’s close partnership with Netanyahu, built during his previous term in office. For Vance, the decision to remain neutral appears rooted in a practical division of responsibilities within the administration and a desire to maintain focus on the approaching domestic electoral contests that will determine control of Congress.

As Israel’s election approaches, the question remains whether Trump’s endorsement will prove decisive in a contest that will shape not only Israel’s future but the broader strategic landscape of the Middle East.
